The lives of those in New York’s Lower East Side will be on the VEISHEA stage next year.
The Tony award-winning musical “Rent“ has been chosen as the 2012 Stars Over VEISHEA play. At the end of March, the VEISHEA committee chose it as next year’s production.
“We tried to pick a musical for next year that will cater towards students more. ‘Rent’ is such a big show and so many people know about it,” said Katie Pernula, freshman in marketing and the 2011 Stars Over VEISHEA chairperson. “We have had to have budget cuts from the economy, and Stars over VEISHEA did take a lot of that hit because it was more community-based than student-based. That’s why we picked ‘Rent’ to kind of change all that.”
With the university struggling from economic problems, funding for Stars over VEISHEA has been slightly cut recently. Pernula said the cut is the main reason the event is being moved from Stephens Auditorium to Fisher Theater this year. Despite the budget cuts in the past couple years, Pernula has been working to make the production a larger entity on campus during VEISHEA week with more advertising and community awareness.
