After a round of preliminaries, 40 Cyclone Idol contestants were whittled down to 12 competitors who will be performing at 7 p.m. Wednesday, in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union.
VEISHEA entertainment co-chairs Amy Peyton, senior in agricultural business, and Will Postler, junior in religious studies, have been working on preparations for the upcoming competition, which will feature rapper Coolio as the emcee.
During the preliminary round, the applicants had five minutes to wow the judges and get selected to perform Wednesday evening.
This year, not much has changed from previous events, other than the committee’s decision to select a more popular emcee.
“We’re hoping to draw more people having Coolio host,” Peyton said.
The co-chairs received 40 applications, which was the amount they were expecting to receive, and after two nights of preliminaries, judges selected 12 performers. The judges, who include faculty and community members with musical backgrounds, will be looking for vocal talent, presence on stage and other similar aspects.
“We’re excited about the applicants,” Peyton said. “They look pretty cool, lots of variety of songs.”
For last year’s Cyclone Idol champion, Joseph Trpkosh, senior in music, the contest is less about the prestige and more about sharing talent and the message of the song. His advice for competitors is “enjoy the process and don’t get too caught up in winning the competition.”
“I wasn’t entering the contest to win and because of this I think the most memorable part was the enjoyment of the process,” Trpkosh said.
Trpkosh received $200 for his first place win, but said the best piece of advice for the contestants is to enjoy the experience.
“Singing is not about winning competitions, but rather sharing your talent and the message of your song,” Trpkosh said.
