Mark Bridges for “The Artist”
Though “The Artist” was filmed in black and white, Bridges’ costume designs won him his first Academy Award. Other nominees included Lisy Christl for “Anonymous”, Sandy Powell for “Hugo”, Michael O’Connor for “Jane Eyre” and Arianne Phillips for “W.E.”.
Best Foreign Language Film
“A Separation” directed by Asghar Farhadi- Iran
This is the first award for an Iranian film. Other nominees included “Bullhead” from Belgium, “Monsieur Lazhar” from Canada, “Footnote” from Israel and “In Darkness” from Poland.
Best Actress in a Supporting Role
Octavia Spencer for “The Help”
Spencer and costar Jessica Chastain were both nominated for their roles in “The Help.” Other nominees included Berenice Bejo for “The Artist,” Melissa McCarthy for “Bridesmaids” and Janet McTeer for “Albert Nobbs.”
Best Film Editing
Kirk Baxter and Angus Wall for “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”
This is the second consecutive award for the team, who also won for “The Social Network.” Other nominees included Anne-Sophie Bion and Michel Hazanavicius for “The Artist”, Kevin Tent for “The Descendants”, Thelma Schoonmaker for “Hugo” and Christopher Tellefsen for “Moneyball”.
Best Sound Editing
Philip Stockton and Eugene Gearty for “Hugo”

At the age of 82, Plummer is the oldest actor to win an Oscar. Other nominees include Kenneth Branagh for “My Week with Marilyn”, Jonah Hill for “Moneyball”, Nick Nolte for “Warrior” and Max von Sydow for “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.”
Best Original Score
Ludovic Bource for “The Artist”
Bource had no experience in this field prior to “The Artist.” This is his first award and nomination. Other nominees included John Williams for “The Adventures of Tintin” and “War Horse”, Howard Shore for “Hugo” and Alberto Iglesias for “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”.
Best Original Song
“Man or Muppet” by Bret McKenzie for “The Muppets”
This is the first award and nomination for Bret McKenzie of New Zealand-based band, Flight of the Conchords. “Real in Rio” from the film “RIO” was also nominated.
Best Directing
Michel Hazanavicius for “The Artist”
This is Hazanavicius’ first award. Other nominees included Alexander Payne for “The Descendants”, Martin Scorsese for “Hugo”, Woody Allen for “Midnight in Paris” and Terrence Malick for “The Tree of Life”.

Jean Dujardin for “The Artist”
