Battlefield Cropped

Today I’ll be discussing my view on the announcement of Battlefield 4. There are both positives and negatives, so let’s jump right in.

First of all, my reflections on BF3. I was so hyped for this game; in fact I was convinced it woulf be the best shooter ever made. Alas, I was disappointed, but I suppose I can blame it on consistently watching the PC footage, instead of CONSOLE footage.

Yes, the console version of the game was just not well done. Frequent patches, graphical glitches (neither of which happened in Bad Company 2), and many other problems plague the game and frankly make it feel like the most unpolished entry in the entire Battlefield lineup. Remember, this is for consoles, I haven’t played it on PC, but I hear its loads better.

Anyway, my reasoning behind this is two things: DICE is still experimenting with their Frostbite 2 engine, and the current systems are too weak for them to get the gameplay effect they want. I hold to both of these, because they make absolute sense. In fact, I can GUARANTEE that the studio’s next entry that lands on the next generation of consoles will in fact be what they wanted BF3 to be.

Honestly, Looking down a sniper scope at a group of buildings and seeing more jaggies than an N64 game is unacceptable, especially when predecessors (BC2) didn’t have that issue. When DICE learns more about its new engine and has the power of the new consoles, THAT’S when this series will shine with Frostbite 2.

Additionally, I’m very sad that no announcement about Bad Company 3 has been made. I far more prefer the gameplay of the BC series than that of BF3, BF2, all of the numbered Battlefields. I don’t know, they just FEEL better to me.

Also, please explain to me how destruction is ten times more relevant and better in BC2 than BF3. So much for the promise of enhanced destruction. In BC2, all you saw were collapsing buildings. In BF3, you’re lucky to see one every 10 games. It’s truly a let down and I hope they can redeem themselves in the next installment.

I don’t know what to expect from BF4, but you can bet that I will NOT be buying it on 360. When I eventually get a next-gen console, that console will be my platform of choice for the shooter.
